How To Maintain Healthy Ears

How To Maintain Healthy Ears

Your hearing is an important part of your overall health and well-being. You may not realize it, but we don't actually hear with our ears. We hear when sound travels through our ears and reaches the auditory cortex of the brain. Because we hear with our brain, it's important to take good care of our hearing in order to maintain our overall health. One of the best ways to be proactive of your hearing is to keep your ears healthy.

Learn more about how you can practice good ear health with the tips below.

Tips for Good Ear Health

Taking care of your ears will ensure you continue hearing your best for many years to come. Practicing good ear health consists of protecting your hearing, keeping objects out of your ears, and having your hearing checked annually.

  • Limit your exposure to loud noise. Sounds over 80 dB (decibels) can be very damaging to your hearing. It's crucial to wear custom hearing protection or earplugs whenever you are exposed to loud noise. If you work with power tools, enjoy hunting, or listen to live music, then you should wear hearing protection to keep your ears safe.
  • Don't put objects inside your ears. Although this may seem self-explanatory, many people use cotton swabs to remove earwax. Cotton swabs can be dangerous for the ear because they can scratch the ear canal or even puncture the eardrum. If you have earwax that is bothering you, it is best to contact us. We can safely remove any earwax in our office to help you hear clearly again.
  • Reduce the volume of your music. If you listen to music through earbuds, then it is important to keep the volume below 80 decibels. Earbuds deliver music directly inside your ear, often times at a volume that is too loud. To protect your ears, it is important to lower the volume of the music you listen to in order to avoid noise-induced hearing loss.
  • Receive annual hearing checks. The best way to be proactive about your hearing and ear health is to schedule regular hearing exams. We can check your hearing and be sure to catch any signs of hearing loss early. Having your hearing checked regularly is as crucial as going to the dentist on a regular basis.
